King of the Jungle is an interesting variation of chess based on the traditional Chinese game of “Dou Shou Qi” - the battle of the animals! The game is simple and yet requires good analytical skills to succeed.

The board represents two warring factions of animals on the opposite sides of a river. The objective is to be the first player to move one of your animals into the opponent’s den. Each den is surrounded by 3 trap squares which have a special significance as described below. There are three bridges across the river for the animals to cross. Each animal has a “rank” i.e. Elephant is ranked 1, Lion as 2 etc.

Moves

Each animal can move one square horizontally or vertically at a time. Diagonal moves are not permitted. No animal may enter its own den. A lower ranked animal cannot move to a square occupied by a higher ranked animal (subject to rules of capture below) i.e. the Lion of rank 2 cannot move to the square of the Elephant of rank 1. Only one animal may occupy a square at any time. To make a move, tap the animal and then tap the desired destination square.

Special Powers

1. • The mouse is the only animal that may enter the river. All other animals must use the bridges to get across
   

2. • The lion and tiger may jump vertically or horizontally in a straight line across the river from any of the squares / bridges adjoining the banks. Such a jump is not permitted if a mouse is in the line of the jump in the river.
   

Capture

An animal may capture an opponent piece by moving to the square occupied by the opponent. An animal may capture a piece of equal or lower rank. i.e. Rank 3 may capture Rank 3 and Rank 4 but NOT Rank 1 or Rank 2. There are some exceptions to this rule:

1. • The mouse may capture the elephant but NOT conversely
   

2. • Any animal on any trap square may be captured by an opponent piece irrespective of rank.
   

3. • A mouse in the river may not capture an animal on the land. It can however capture the opponent’s mouse if both are in the river
   

The lion and tiger may capture by “jumping” across the river as described in special powers.
